MOVE FORWARD
Modern mental health care moves fast. Maybe too fast.
You sit down, try to explain what’s been going on, and within minutes, your symptoms are named, a medication is suggested, and you're out the door—still not sure if anyone really heard you.
It’s no wonder so many people feel overprescribed, under-supported, and unsure whether any of it actually helped. Most care doesn’t go much deeper than symptom control.
You deserve a psychiatrist who sees the full picture.
In my practice, we slow things down. I want to understand not just what’s hard, but how you got here, and what you’d like to be different.
You also won’t have to choose between therapy and medication, or bounce between providers, explaining your story over and over. We’ll keep everything in one place, ease what’s painful now—like panic, insomnia, or deep sadness—and move at a pace that works for you.
AREAS OF EXPERTISE
We can work on:
Kevin Cowperthwaite, MD
I grew up here in Colorado, back when Denver felt a little smaller and life moved a little slower. After college at Harvard, I taught high school history for a few years—which, as it turns out, wasn’t so different from what I do now. I’ve always been drawn to helping people make sense of where they’ve been, what they’re carrying, and where they want to go next.
Eventually, that curiosity led me to medicine. I earned my M.D. from the University of Colorado in 1992 and completed my residency in their Department of Psychiatry, where I received awards for both teaching and clinical service. Since then, I’ve stayed rooted here, seeing clients in private practice, teaching med students, and leading seminars across the state.
I’ve been doing this work in Colorado for more than 25 years. I’m board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and I’ve maintained full licensure here since the mid-90s. But what matters more than titles or timelines is how I show up—curious, collaborative, and committed to helping you feel more like yourself again.
How I can help
How I can help
PSYCHOTHERAPY
Talk therapy to help you make sense of patterns, ease distress, and move forward with more clarity—grounded, steady, and collaborative.
MEDICATION
Medication, when helpful, is part of a thoughtful plan. We’ll talk it through and choose an approach to support your life—not just your symptoms.
You don’t have to figure this out by yourself.
If you’ve been pushing through on your own or tried care that left you feeling rushed or unseen—this might be where things start to shift.
Here, we’ll take the time to understand what’s going on beneath the surface and work together toward something that actually helps. Whether that means therapy, medication, or both, we’ll figure it out at a pace that works for you.

My goal is to offer a supportive space where you can talk openly about what isn’t working and what a better life might look like. I tailor my approach to each person, drawing from psychodynamic therapy along with skills and strategies from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
